Here's the deal: New Year's resolutions aren't really my thing. I set big goals all year, and I've gotten pretty good at chasing them down. But what I am into is setting a context for the year. It's like laying the foundation before building the house—it keeps everything steady when the winds (or chaos) come blowing through.
Last year, after an unexpected heart procedure that knocked me and my family for a loop, my word was "healing." This year, I've chosen not one but two words, and I'm sharing them with you because I believe in the power of accountability and trust y'all to hold me capable of living them out.
Boundaries, Growth, and Getting Real
Let me tell you, the lessons that came my way this past year weren't gentle whispers; they were more like a smack upside the head. Boundaries have been a significant growth area for me. I've had to face my tendencies to overcommit, juggle competing priorities, and…well, let's be honest…sometimes let my need to be liked outweigh my need to speak up. Coming off the rollercoaster of COVID and another chaotic election cycle, I found myself sucked into the world's frenetic pace.
We live in a time where instant gratification is the expectation, and juggling a dozen "#1 priorities" is just another Tuesday. And honestly, it pissed me off. It tested my sweetness and patience in ways I didn't love. But growth doesn't come wrapped in a bow, does it? The discomfort and challenges invite us to think, create, and show up differently. And that's how I landed on my two words for 2025: Unna and Community.
Word #1: Unna
In my quest to simplify my life, I stumbled upon this word: Unna. It's not an English word but packs a meaning that feels like home. Unna represents the art of simplicity and living with intention. It's about cutting the clutter—physically, emotionally, and mentally—to focus on what truly matters. It's clarity, connection, and mindfulness all rolled into one.
This year, Unna will guide me to an uncomplicated, meaningful existence. You might have already noticed some changes in how we do things at Tandem—that's Unna in action. It's about making thoughtful, intentional choices that serve the bigger picture.
Word #2: Community
Now, here's where it gets personal. It's easy to go solo, isn't it? No need to collaborate, compromise, or stretch those patience muscles. But life is better in community—I've seen it firsthand. My ranch life is surrounded by family: my parents, baby sister, brother-in-law, nieces, and my own crew. I live in my hometown, where people know me, greet me, and genuinely care. That's a blessing I don't take lightly.
And when I step back and study life, it's clear: doing anything in community is richer and more fulfilling. That's the root of how Maddie and I approach our work at Tandem. Sure, we could take the reins and do it all for you like every other agency. But we'd rather do it with you. That's where the magic happens.
This year, I'm leaning into more community moments—personally and professionally. And here's a little sneak peek: we're launching a special community event later this year. You won't want to miss it if you're looking for margin, energy, and a renewed sense of life in your vision. Stay tuned for details!
What About You?
So, what's your context for 2025? Have you set the tone, or are you winging it? If you've got a word (or two), I'd love to hear about it. Let's make this the year we live with intention, build meaningful connections, and embrace the growth that comes our way.
Cheers to a year of Unna and Community!
